Year-round hunting and few restrictions make coyotes and prairie dogs popular off-season game. Found throughout South Dakota's prairies and rolling hills, prairie dogs may be hunted all year on private lands with the owner's permission and on public lands, such as the Fort Pierre National Grassland, from mid-June through February. (National Grasslands Phone: 605-224-5517) Scattered throughout the state, coyotes may be hunted year round.
Hunters interested in developing the accuracy and skill required to shoot small game at long distances find valuable resources in the Varmint Hunters Association. Based in Fort Pierre, the international organization promotes safe, responsible hunting of small game and predators through shooting events and competitions, education programs, and its quarterly publication,
The Varmint Hunter Magazine. For more information, visit
